Summer Reading List 2012
Students Entering Grade 5
Below is a summer reading list for incoming fifth graders. To help your child find their reading level, have them read one full page of text. Fewer than three mistakes indicates a comfortable reading level. Please remember that the goal of summer reading is for enjoyment and to maintain skills. Therefore, we encourage each child to read at least 2 books from the list. After they finish each book, students need to complete the following on lined paper (illustration may be done on plain paper):
Students should bring their completed projects with them in September and hand them in to their homeroom teachers. Students who complete summer reading will be recognized in the fall. Happy Reading!

- At least one paragraph (5-7 sentences) summarizing the plot of the story including all major events. Support with details and evidence from the text.
- At least one paragraph (5-7 sentences) identifying and describing at least two of the main characters (person, animal, or imaginary creature) in the book and telling how the characters changed throughout the story. Support with details and evidence from the text.
- At least one paragraph (5-7 sentences) describing the setting (time and place) of the story. Support with details and evidence from the text.
- An illustration showing the most important scene in the story, including a caption describing the illustration.
Students should bring their completed projects with them in September and hand them in to their homeroom teachers. Students who complete summer reading will be recognized in the fall. Happy Reading!
