- Math homework will be given Monday-Thursday. Weekends will be reserved for Open Response re-writes and long-term projects. If a student comes to school without their homework, they will have to pay $3 Butler Bucks and must sit silently during dismissal to work on the assignment.
- Homework is graded together in class and students are given the opportunity to ask questions and clarify problem areas. Homework assignments are not regularly given a formal grade, but are used as an informal assessment and a way for me to see which students are struggling. If, on occasion, I feel that work is sloppy or not being completed to the best of the student's ability, I may give a formal grade to a few assignments at random to prevent this.
- On most Thursdays, students will be given a short quiz which will assess their knowledge of an individual skill previously learned. I also include questions on any areas that are recurring problems (for example, rounding and place value). The quizzes are designed to take less than 10 minutes to complete.
- At the end of each unit, students will be given a comprehensive assessment on all skills covered in that unit, plus several review skills.
- Tests, some quizzes, and work samples will be compiled into student portfolios. Graded tests will be sent home for a parent signature and then returned to school to be put in the portfolio. These work samples will serve as illustrations of students' strengths and weaknesses in math.
- Every Friday in math is Open Response/Game Day. Students will practice strategies for answering MCAS open response questions and will then play a math game (if there is time) that matches the skills learned that week in math.
